The expression, “I need to work on my work vs life balance” has always struck me as odd. It’s presented in a way that work and life are distinctly opposite forces, competing for your attention.
- Is work not part of life and life not part of work?
- What if your work brings out some of your best feelings?
- What if you love your work?
There’s absolutely no shame in loving working as a Salesforce consultant. It’s a constantly evolving ecosystem and there are never any shortages of things to do. The needs of your client will probably not disappear tomorrow once you’ve successfully released that huge project.
Perhaps a better phrase is, “I need to make more time for my family/my health/my personal life/my friends/some other interests”. Whichever part you feel is suffering a little because your attention is elsewhere.
The takeaway
It’s not about balance, it’s about attention. We only have a finite amount of it per day, so make sure to keep your attention balanced among the things you love. And giving attention to something is a sign of love.
