I had a great conversation with a student of mine today. We spoke about how junior Salesforce consultants believe senior consultants know everything.

They perceive senior consultants as a large book of knowledge, who can immediately find the right page with a moment’s notice. They can determine the “right” solution within seconds, and can remember the syntax for formulas.

Reality is far from this imagined picture.

The truth is, senior consultants do have lots of knowledge. But there’s a limit to how much you can reliably access at a moment’s notice.

The “trick” is, they know how to Google.

While you don’t want to Google everything, there’s no shame in Googling the syntax for date formulas, or what is the order of execution.

I’ve even Googled things while screen sharing with a client. There’s no shame in that. It shows you’re human and cannot and do not need to remember everything. But you know how to find it!

The takeaway
Knowing how to quickly find the solution to certain questions is a skill. Just like any other skill, develop it and be comfortable with it. As long as it’s not a constant crutch, keep using it as part of your overall toolkit.
