As an independent Salesforce consultant, also known as a soloist, you need to have certain document templates.

When I start an engagement with a client, it typically starts with a sales call. If everything is aligned, I submit a 4 or 5 page proposal. Nothing longer. It uses very plain language, expresses the client’s current situation, and provides three options to resolve their issues.

If the client wants to proceed, they usually respond by email with their preferred option. Then I submit a Master Service Agreement (MSA). The MSA a legal document, drafted by my lawyer. It covers topics as such as Intellectual Property (IP), that I’m an independent contractor, payment terms, liability limitations, and termination clauses.

Another important clause is the Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). This is the part that says you’ll protect their data, and destroy it upon request.

The selected option is pasted into the appendix. This way I only need to adjust the first page and last page of the MSA for each client.

To submit the MSA, I use a proper contract signing application called DocHub. It’s a free app that integrates well with Gmail and Google Drive.

The takeaway
When you start as a soloist, it’s important to work with a lawyer in your region. They will help you draft the MSA and NDA to suit your specific services. Don’t skimp on this process and use a contract generator online.
