This is a common question asked by clients, at the start of the implementation phase of a Salesforce project. They typically want to know when everything will be done. And this is a question you need to learn how to avoid answering directly.
Why avoid a direct answer? Because you don’t have full control over all the aspects of a project. Heck, even the CEO doesn’t have full control over things.
There are usually too many moving parts to answer this. Things such as
- How long it takes for the client to get back to you with an answer
- When committees submit their approval
- End user training and acceptance
- Unexpected changes in priorities
- Scope creep
Why would you commit to something you cannot guarantee?
Instead, offer your client a date range, and don’t be afraid to keep it wide. Most projects go past initial timelines so don’t be shy to include longer dates.
Something like, “This will take a minimum of x months, and probably more like x * 4” (that’s four times longer than the minimum). Or “We’ll do our best to make your desired date, but please keep in mind we don’t have full control over this project.”
The takeaway
Predicting the end date of a project is like asking for a sunny day on your wedding day. We all want it, but you cannot guarantee it.
