At a local Salesforce user group meeting today, I was talking to someone that recently entered the Salesforce community.
He made the decision to reposition his career last year, then studied and passed the Administrator certification. Now he’s looking for his first full-time or freelance position. Things are tougher than he expected, and he heard that having a mentor could help.
After hearing that I mentor Salesforce consultants, he asked me, “When is the best time to get a mentor?”
Take a moment and consider how you would answer this question.
I smiled and responded, “Only you know the answer.” There never is a “best” time. The “right” time is anytime you’re stuck, blocked, or need help. A mentor can help you get past these obstacles, and prevent you from falling into any unproductive behaviors.
His followup question was, “Why would I pay to have a mentor when others offer it for free?”
My response was, “Sometimes you get what you pay for.”
The takeaway
One of my favorite expressions is, “You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t possibly live long enough to make them all yourself” – Sam Levenson.
