The expression “the elephant in the room” refers to a significant issue or problem that is obvious but is being ignored by those involved.

The metaphorical elephant occupies a lot of space in the room, but people simply ignore it. This is because they perceive that talking about the elephant is worse than pretending it doesn’t exist.

However that’s not necessarily true.

In a conversation with a fellow reader about Invoking engagement during client demos, she asked my thoughts about acknowledging the resistance.

Here’s my paraphrased response:

“Calling out the elephant in the room is another strategy that can work well. Instead of avoiding the uncomfortableness of the subject, it can be helpful to address it head-on. The conversation can actually create comradery.”

Approach your disinterested client from the position of, “I know you guys aren’t keen on this project. We see it firsthand. But let’s keep in mind we are here to help you grow. Let’s try and get past this moment together and achieve those goals.”

The takeaway
Sometimes it’s better to call out the elephant in room than to avoid it. Approach the situation with empathy and non-judgement. Position yourself as their ally in their discomfort and resistance.
