Making the decision to be a digital nomad is a big step. It involves re-evaluating your current working situation and lifestyle, and then determining you want a change.

Usually this change doesn’t just impact you. Often there’s a partner to consider, perhaps children, and even extended family members. The decision to not see aging parents for an extended period of time can be challenging. I feel you on that one.

Ultimately you need to live the life you want. Not the life others want you to live. After all, why would you settle for anything else? Should dreams remain as dreams, never to be fulfilled? Or are they for someone else, something you could only hope for but never reach yourself.

In Tim Ferriss’ book “The 4 Hour Workweek”, one of the principles he advocates for is taking “mini-retirements” throughout your life. This means, not working hard your entire life, and then retiring and traveling when you’re old. It means taking a short break during your career and filling it with travel and adventure.

I propose combining this principle with work. Take the mini-retirement while you’re still young to travel, and work during that period to maintain your lifestyle. It’s the best of both worlds 🙂

The takeaway
A digital nomadic lifestyle doesn’t need to be “just a dream”. By combining the mini-retirements with work, you get the best of both worlds.
