There are many ways to build trust with a new client. Here is one of the more unusual ones: swearing.
According to a 2017 study, “We found a consistent positive relationship between profanity and honesty; profanity was associated with less lying and deception at the individual level and with higher integrity at the society level.”
So the more you swear, the more honest you are perceived to be. And honesty is one step towards building trust.
Now, I’m not suggesting you start using the f word or some other strong profanity, but knowing this information does give you an advantage. For example, when appropriate and in a more casual setting, I’ve said things like, “This is a piece of crap”, or “This part of one of the most annoying parts of Salesforce”.
The takeaway
If you’re inclined, and it fits with your character, call out a small curse word once in a while. Just keep in mind this needs to be done using situational awareness and not definitely focused on anyone.
