As a Salesforce consultant, one simple and effective way to build a connection with a new client is to compliment them. This can also be used to deepen a connection with an existing client.
As you know, people love receiving compliments! This holds true for both the personal and business world.
For example, I often have clients which need some type of mentoring. Perhaps they are still new to Salesforce, or have simply lost their passion for the platform. A well-timed compliment accompanied with a smile, can be up-lifting and can encourage them to keep making progress.
The important thing to remember is, the compliment has to be genuine.
Complimenting someone for doing something they already know is not a true compliment. People will perceive that as a hand-out or plain disingenuous. It could even reduce their trust in you.
Instead, when someone does something for the first time, or surprises you in a small way, call it out. “Hey, you did it! That’s awesome! Look at you go! You’re on your way to becoming a Salesforce report export!” I’ve actually said these words verbatim, and the client glowed with pride.
The takeaway
Genuine compliments are an easy hack to build trust and a deeper connection with clients. Use it when appropriate but sparingly. An occasional compliment has more value than a compliment in every other sentence.
