I often advocate for being a Salesforce specialist instead of a generalist. There are numerous benefits to selecting a specific focus and then diving deep to become a specialist in that group.

When looking from a higher perspective, however, we are all already specialists: While we continue work with Salesforce, we are platform specialists.

This means our careers are based on a single platform. An incredibly large platform, certainly, but a single platform nevertheless.

We are all like surfers on the enormous wave that is Salesforce.

I relish the surfing metaphor, as it personifies us as free-spirited, adventure-seeking, and highly talented. After all, not everyone can be a good surfer; it takes years of practice to balance while on the wave.

Just keep in mind the wave will eventually end and you’ll be back on shore. Where you go from there is up to you. But the key thought I want to leave you with is make sure you invest in yourself and level-up in more than just Salesforce skills.

The takeaway
To be a “good enough” consultant, you need much more than Salesforce skills. So balance your time improving multiple skillsets, and not just one.
