The Salesforce job market right now is hotter than ever, and it feels like new opportunities are everywhere.
The interview process can feel intimidating, so here are some tips to help you present yourself in the best possible way.
1. Remember that an interview is a conversation. They are trying to see if you would be a good fit for their organization and you are confirming you actually want to work with them. Some of the best interviews I’ve conducted blew-up the predefined script, and we just free styled. Be sure to ask questions along the way such as, “Why do you enjoy working here?”
2. Adapt your language depending on whom you’re speaking with. Are you talking with a recruiter, a manager or a fellow techie?
- Your goal with recruiters is to simply convey you’re the right person for this job. Stuff like do you have the proper qualifications and have you done something similar in the past. Speak confidently and professionally.
- Managers want to know your character, what motivates you and how you can positively contribute to the organization. Speak slowly and confidently, and don’t be afraid to share some of your vulnerabilities. Show them you are a person, not a resource.
- Techies want to know the details, to challenge you and make sure you’re technically capable. Use jargon liberally and get them excited about the subject.
3. Research the organization and each of the people you’re meeting in advance. LinkedIn is a great source of information for this. What you’re looking for is ways to communicate with each person.
For example, if someone loves sports, consider using sports idioms when talking with them. If they love to travel, mention something about your last voyage. Note: Don’t tell them you researched them, as that would be awkward.
