One of the many things I love about being a Salesforce architect is the ability to work remotely. Although it wasn’t so common a few years ago, it’s pretty much the default today.
Of course, being remote doesn’t mean you need to stay in your home office. We can work from cafes, coworking spaces, or truly remote locations as a digital nomad. Recently, I noticed more and more countries are trying to entice you to work remotely, and visas for digital nomads are popping up like popcorn.
What exactly is a digital nomad visa? It’s a program that gives you the right to work in a foreign country for longer than a typical tourist visa.
Spain was the most recent country to announce it will offer these visas, starting in Jan 2023. I love working in Spain for multiple reasons, and it’s easier to continue working in Eastern hours (EST) as compared to other European countries.
Benefits include:
- No wake-up alarms needed, as 9am EST is only 3pm local time
- You can either leisurely wake up or focus deeply on your projects without fear of interruption
- Siesta starts around 2pm, so just as most stores close, you head indoors (i.e. you’re not missing much)
- Although you finish the workday around 11pm, most Spaniards only start eating dinner in restaurants around 10pm (in fact, most places are empty before then)
- It’s easy to jump on a plane and travel somewhere else in Europe for a getaway weekend
- The weather is pretty awesome all year around
Of course, Spain is just my personal preference. Here is a list of countries offering digital nomad visas around the world, so you have lots of options.
The takeaway
If you’ve ever considered becoming a digital nomad, now is a great time to take the leap.
