Given how Salesforce certifications have lost most of their value, another question logically follows. How do you convey knowledge without them?

Here are three steps to get you going.

1. Specialize
If you’re a generalist, it’s difficult to distinguish yourself from your competition. When you’re the master of everything, you’re the master of nothing. So pick a specialization.

It could be an industry (finance, health, education, etc.), a cloud (Service Cloud, Revenue Cloud, Field Service, etc.), or a psychographic (busy professionals, sports fans, art lovers, etc.).

2. Locate your potential clients
Once you’ve identified your people, find out where they hang out. Are they often on LinkedIn, online communities, public events, or somwehere else? Then hang out where they hang out. Then listen to their issues.

This was once explained to me as, “water cooler chat”.

3. Help your potential clients
Once you hear their issues, freely help them as much as possible. Offer your insights, advice, experience, anything you can do to help.

The more you contribute, the more people will see you as a subject matter expert.

The takeaway
Building authority takes time, but following these three steps can help you start this journey.
