When working with others, someone is bound to have different opinions. Sometimes people really believe they are right, that you are wrong, and they are ready to defend their position.

As a Salesforce consultant, sometimes you’re in the middle of these disagreements. Here are a few considerations to help you.

Remember that it’s often not about who’s right or wrong, but how you disagree that matters. Being respectful, acting in good faith, and listening to others are valuable traits.

Sometimes, when I notice an argument is brewing, proclaim these intentions. Something like, “Hey, this seems to be a sensitive topic and I want to better understand your position. Just so you know, I’m acting in good faith here. I trust you will act the same.”

Sometimes just this can disarm and diffuse a situation.

If you’re in the middle of a disagreement, be sure to allow each person to present their side. Remember it’s your responsibility to be impartial when working towards a net positive outcome.

And when a resolution cannot be determined on the spot, give yourself time and space for things to cool down. You can always restart another time.

The takeaway
In the end, we are all working towards the betterment of our clients. Let’s not let our egos completely lose that focus.
