Every problem has a solution. Or two. Or three. But did you know that three is actually the best?
Why is that? Well, our brains are naturally wired to respond to three. It’s the smallest number needed to determine a pattern, which makes it naturally appealing.
It also appears often in culture. From movie trilogies (part 1, 2, 3) to storytelling (beginning, middle, end) to discussing time (past, present, future) and even moments to eat (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
With too few options, we generally feel limited. With too many options, we generally feel overwhelmed. Three seems to be a “just right” number.
So when you’re faced with a Salesforce problem, try your best to come up with three solutions.
You’ll also notice that the first solution you think of is probably not the best. So spending time to think of another helps see things from another perspective. And the third option may be an even better option, or perhaps an intentional worse option to make option two look like the best choice.
You’ll also notice senior consultants almost always offer three choices.
The takeaway
The power of three helps with decision fatigue and customer satisfaction.
