In Montreal, Canada, there’s a popular diner for smoked meat sandwiches.
It’s basically an institution in the city, and there’s always a long line outside the establishment, regardless of the time of day.
Inside, the chefs carefully prepare each sandwich, whistling, and cracking jokes at each other. They work at a slow pace, and completely ignore the sense of urgency coming from the impatient people waiting in line.
Why am I telling you this?
As a Salesforce consultant, there are always things to do. You could work very long hours into the night, ignoring your health or your personal life, and toil away. But there’s always going to be more work. There isn’t a finish line you’ll be able to cross and finally proclaim, “That’s it, I’m done!”
There will be more things to do the next day. And the next.
The takeaway
It’s OK to work longer hours once in a while. For an important deadline or for a milestone that others depend on. But except for these rare occasions, it’s much healthier for you to acknowledge you cannot do everything, and put work aside. More of that will be waiting for you tomorrow anyway.
Whistling is always encouraged.
