One of the most important observations I made during my many travels is often downplayed.
In the media, there’s a focus on our differences and they are often exaggerated. It doesn’t matter if they talk about people from different continents, countries, regions, states or even cities. There’s a strong emphasis on what separates us.
Cultures, perspectives, ideologies, habits, lifestyle, skin color, hair color, eye color, fashion sense, education. Pick a topic and there’s an overwhelming focus on how you and I are different.
One way to see through this nonsense is to travel.
After visiting more than 50 countries, I can safely say we are significantly more alike than we are different. Like 80% to 90% identical.
We all want to be loved, to have good relationships, a sense of purpose, the freedom to make choices, to connect with others, to feel welcomed, to laugh together, to cry together, to feel safe, to succeed, to hope, to love.
The more you travel, the more you understand how we are all connected. Traveling brings us closer together. Traveling opens our eyes.
The takeaway
Being a digital nomad isn’t just about working in another country. It’s about seeing things for how they truly are, and seeing how truly similar we are. It’s about having a better understanding that we are all human.
