As a Salesforce consultant, can you be paid for time not spent in front of your computer?
To answer this question, let’s take a step back in time for a moment, and let’s examine my personal journey.
My professional career started as a software developer. I programmed in C language, developing real-time code for 16-bit microprocessors in the telecom industry. I loved the work binary nature of the work. Things either worked, or it didn’t. There wasn’t a grey area.
Long hours were spent in front of the screen. And I was paid well for the work. Things felt simple. If I wasn’t coding, I wasn’t working. That too was binary.
Then some years later, I became an independent CRM consultant, billing by the hour. Although I didn’t code anymore, the mindset of, “if I’m not in front of my computer, it’s not work” continued.
About three years ago, this mindset started to change. My services switched from hourly to fixed pricing. And that’s when this mindset completely disappeared.
Today, I charge monthly or by the project. Either way, if I’m not in front of my computer, I still get paid. And this allows me to indulge in more personal activities.
The takeaway
When your services are fixed prices, you can enjoy time away from the screen. And you don’t need to worry about losing revenue. It’s a life-changing mindset.
