There’s more and more chatter about AI replacing developers. Mark Zuckerberg talks about it often these days, and even Marc Benioff has made more than a few comments about it.

While it’s hard to predict the near future, I’m pretty sure about the state of AI today. In short, as great as it is, it’s not quite ready to fully replace developers.

For example, for my Salesforce app, my developer uses AI. It allows him to troubleshoot issues, come up with ideas for how to tackle various challenges, and generally serve as a sounding board.

But I wouldn’t replace him with AI.

Why? Because I still feel it’s necessary for an expert to review code created by AI. I don’t trust it to know how to write clean, usable code that understands the entire context.

Perhaps in a few months or years, this will no longer be the case. But for now, I trust the human experts that use AI more than just AI.

If you’re a developer, I’d love to hear from you. Do you feel your career is really threatened by AI? If so, how will you respond?

The takeaway
As of today, (developers + AI) > AI only, and (developers + AI) > (developers – AI)
