Yesterday’s email about “Yes, and”… with clients and the example with a client with a dumb idea seems to have ruffled a few features. So let’s talk about another use case, one in which you’re working with fellow team members.

Let’s say you’re doing a Salesforce discovery session with a handful of colleagues and the client. In the middle of a brainstorming idea, one of your colleagues suggests something that may not be ideal for the situation.

To stay positive and constructive, you could incorporate the “yes, and .. ” from improvisational comedy. The underlying message here is you acknowledge what your colleague said and then expand on that line of thinking.

This helps redirect away from the potentially bad idea and/or improve upon it.

Here’s an example:

  • Colleague: “Hey, how about we build a custom Lightning Web Component for this request?”
  • You: “Yes, and that’s definitely one way to solve the problem. What if we tried a simpler approach and used a screen flow instead? Can you think of a way this wouldn’t work?”

The takeaway
Good ideas are sourced from a lot of ideas. Not all of those ideas will be spectacular, but how you handle and work with them makes you a better Salesforce consultant.
