There are all sorts of reasons why people go independent. In the Salesforce ecosystem, here are three positive ones.
Autonomy
The lifestyle generally allows you to be in control. You choose your clients, how hard you work, how long you work, when to take breaks, and so on. Asking for permission to take a vacation or having to prove to someone that you deserve a raise are a thing of the past.
The sense of freedom is definitely one of the most considered reasons to be independent.
Meaningful work
When you’re an employee, you’re generally assigned to projects, You don’t have much or any say in the matter. When you’re independent, you actively choose each client and each project.
There may be times in which you’d rather not work on something, but your financial situation strongly encourages you to do so. But these moments don’t usually appear too often. At the least, you may have one really interesting project and a handful of less interesting ones.
Financial success
Going back to the “asking for a raise” comment, your financial ceiling gets a lot higher.
Charging by your hour will help get past the salary ceiling, but the real freedom is when you do fixed prices. Then your ceiling gets A LOT higher. As long as you produce value and quality, your imagination and drive become the limits.
The takeaway
Freedom, rewarding work, and more money.
