There’s a recent article from BusinessInsider that makes some interesting points about leaving a major city.
The context is that since the pandemic, people have been moving out of metropolitan cities and moving to the suburbs or the countryside. The trend continued until at least mid-2023.
The motivation for making the move is cost. You can get a bigger place for less outside cities like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The article mentioned that people generally experience an improvised quality of life. At least, up until they seek new employment.
Basically, individuals who lived in small labor markets were less likely to find a new job within a year, compared to those in large labor markets. And they were more likely to settle for a job outside of their preferred industry.
Part of the reason why is because fewer and fewer companies are hiring for purely remote work. And being surrounded by similar individuals provides more opportunities to meet, connect, and build your professional network.
The takeaway
If you are considering moving to the burbs, be sure you understand the pros and cons of your decision. Some cons are less obvious than others.
