I recall an article from several years ago about mobile phone usage. The article basically said that low-income families now have access to the same information as high-income families.

That is to say, they both have a mobile phone capable of accessing this information. How each group spends time on their phones differs greatly.

Lower income individuals generally spend more time on social media, reading about celebrities, and gaming. Higher income people use their phones for learning, discovering, and empowering themselves.

This disparity really had on hold on me. It made me question how I spend my leisure time with the phone.

Taking a wider perspective, when you have breaks between working on projects and spending time with family and friends, how do you spend it?  How should you spend it?

  • Are you bending towards your phone?
  • Are you aware of the passage of time?

or

  • Do you have hobbies that entertain you and expand your mind?
  • Do things with purpose and intent?

The takeaway
While not every moment needs to be enriching your life, don’t lean too far away from this idea. Being “bored” with your thoughts is not a sin, and can often lead to some very interesting thoughts.
