While in Spain, there was a moment in which I was travelling between two cities. I had rented a sports car, and loved the thrill of zooming around on perfectly paved roads in a small sedan. Windows down, music blasting, kinda thing.

A demo for a potential client was scheduled that day and I planned to host it from a cafe at my destination. Unfortunately, I didn’t pace well and was forced to stop along the way.

I parked in a small, shaded area near the highway, and did the demo from the car.

So many things went wrong.

  • Since I didn’t have time to prepare, I mistook the client’s Salesforce environment (I believed they had NPC/AFNP instead of NPSP)
  • A few minutes after the demo began, a huge truck needed to pass and I was in its way. So I stopped the demo to move the car
  • I demo’d from my ultra-portable Chromebook, because my laptop’s battery needed charging. This meant a smaller screen

While I felt I recovered before the end, the client recently informed me that I didn’t win the contract. Some of the things that went wrong were mentioned.

The takeaway
Remote working is awesome, up until you’re a little too remote.
