To improve as a Salesforce consultant, it’s important to be self-aware.

There are a few reasons for this.

1. The “Expert Trap”
When I started to learn how to scuba dive, I learned an interesting lesson. Most accidents happen to expert divers. These are people who know the dangers, and yet their ego gets in the way. Since they believe they are better than most, this leads to blind spots.

2. The “Saviour Complex”
The desire to help clients and go above and beyond the call of duty is strong. This is especially true in the nonprofit industry. However, setting time and effort boundaries is important and healthy.

3. Trigger Management
Clients are often very demanding. Keeping your emotions in check helps avoid unnecessary arguments.

This often just means pausing between their comment and your reaction. It also involves trying to understand that what they are saying may not be directly caused by you.

The takeaway
The more self-aware you are, the better consultant you become.
